Please note due to Landrover legal onslaught in the US this is no longer called Rovertracks and is now called rovingtracks www.rovingtracks.com/

EXTRACTS

For the most part a Salibury is a Dana 60. All the components interchange with some minor details that are different.

Most certainly an Ox Locker will fit in you Sali. Let's look a the details that could give us trouble if we don't pay attention.
Factory Rover Ring gear bolts are 12mm the Ox Locker will come with clearance of the 1/2"-20 bolts that are used on the Dana 60 so there will be a bit of clearance, not to worry, the ring gear stays put by virtue of the friction bettween the carrier and the gear, properly torqued it will not move.

The diff cover on the Salisbury uses 10mm bolts, the Dana 60 uses 3/8". Being that the 10mm bolt is slightly larger the clearance holes in the cover will need to be enlarged a bit. I'm certain that the Ox locker cover will have pleant of room for this but be sure to ask before you buy. You will likely need to pick up new 10MM bolts a the hardware store as the factory are going to be too short and Ox might use Socket head cap screws in place of the hex haed type.

You'll need to know what ratio you want to run. Dana 60's and Salisbury axles have a carrier split at 4.10:1. What this means is that the carrier for 4.10 and numerically lower gears is Different than the carrier for 4.56 and numerically higher gears. This is done to prevern the ring gear from getting too thick with the lower ratio gears. Tell the vender the ratio and he should know what to do. If you want to run the 3.54's now but think you might want to go for 4.70's later all is not lost as there is a ring gear spacer available to use the high ratio carrier with the lower gears.

Dana 60 gears fit as well, all the bearings except the Pinion nose bearing are the same, even the pinion seal is the same. You will need t convert to a different type of pinion yoke though as the Dana 60 gears do not use the one that comes with the Salisbury.

Disc brakes on the rear of a Salisbury should be an easy thing in the UK. All the components from a 300tdi Defender will bolt right onto your early Sali. The components you'd need are the hubs, Stub Axles, Axle shafts, caliper brackets, rotors, brake piping and calipers. There is a way to do it on the cheap as well using the hubs from a 1989 and earlier RRC, you can tell if the hub is the right one as the shape of it around the drive flange will look the same, it will use 3/8" screws to hold the flange on, some guys just put a 10mm helicoil in each hole. The hubs will fit right on the stub axle, you will need the caliper bracket from the 1996 and later 110. You will also need to machine .120" or so from the caliper mouonting surface to make Disco rear calipers fit with the Disco rotors, then make a brake pipe. If you have a really old (1986ish) Salisbury you can use front hubs from a 110 up to 1995 and tehy bolt right on.

Wow a front Salisbury! Rare as hens teeth over here. That should already have Discs on it so your good there.

Of course there's the sales pitch, I can make you Salisbury's mighty tough, using 1.5" 35 spline axles in teh rear and 30 spline Axles and CV's up front you'll end up with a mighty bulletproof set of axles.

I should go into detail of how I build the axles.

Regardless of the year of the axle I use 1996 or later hubs and stub axles on the axles I build.

In front:
The later stub axle lends itself better to boring the inside diameter for the bigger CV joint. Bushings are already made and in stock as well as drive flanges, I use these same components with my Toyota conversion kits, they have proven themselves to be good kit.
Front halfshafts will be 4340 30 spline and we use 30 spline Longfield CV joints. This all caries a lifetime warranty

In the rear:
To fit the giant axles in the Salisbury we use a stub axle I have made specifially for this purpose, it is made from 8620 steel and heat treated to 36RC. Of course the bearings also get mighty big so the hubs need to be machined to allow fitting these big bearings. The axles are integrally flanged units make from 1540H material, they also carry a lifetime warranty. The big stub axles I make are based dimensionally on the 1996 or later hubs.

I hope this helps apologies if it is a mismatch of emails but there is some info in there

Like i said Keith was always so helpful - your best to give him an email.
