LT85 LT230 1985 Land Rover Santana 109 Super 5V 2.3 diesel
Hello. Sorry that I write in English. I have the Santana Landrover 109 Super 2.3 diesel with 5 gears. I probably need a new LT230 transfer box, maybe also a new LT85 gearbox.
It is very difficult to find information about the ratios of my transfer box. It is one with a serial number beginning with E71... It has a selectable 2WD/4WD in high gear and 4WD in low gear. Green knob, 2WD is to the left, 4 WD is to the right and low gear is to the front.
Does anyone here has more informations, especially if the transfer box can be replaced by a british one with permanent 4WD, and if so, with what ratio.
Thank you very much in advance.
Hi,
The Santana LT230 transfer ratio is 1'192:1.
You can install a british LT230, but you shouldn't use is if it has permanent 4wd. You should install a 2wd/4wd kit as supplied by Ashcroft Trasnmissions.
Anyway, any competent mechanic should be able to rebuild the LT230 with no problems.
Thank you for your answer. Why shouldn't I use a permanent 4WD? The combination of LT85 and a LT230 with permanent 4WD was very common in early 110, wasn't it?
If your 109 Super in from 1985, it will have narrow axles, and universal joints in the front axle. You shouldn't use a permanent 4wd transfer in conjunction with universal joints in the front axle. That's why the Defender/Disco/Ranges use CV joints in the front axle.
You can read more about it here: https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/10671-permanent-4wd-on-a-series/
Well, that was interesting to read, thank you. I was hoping the Super 5V - as one of the last 109 - has CV joints like the Stage 1 109 V8. Santana was known to be a little ahead of the British cars. Are you sure that mine does not have CV joints? Is there a way to test it on the road while the car is in 4WD high gear? Or does all the cars with selectable 2WD/4WD not had CV joints? I have the version with 1 gear knob for the gear box and 1 for the transfer box. The question may be stupid, but I am not so familiar with Land Rover.
By the way. You seem to have much experience with the Santanas. I have strong juddering when in reverse and also a little in 1st gear. Also clunking. The whole drive chain is moving and the car fights against resistance. Higher gears are ok (except the 5th which is noisy, probably bearings), but once the car drives, it drives ok. Had a mechanic here who said it is not the clutch. He thought the transfer box. I dont think it is the handbrake. Have you heard of something like that? Maybe a known problem with Santanas? Thankful for any thoughts/tips.
If it only have problems in st and reverse I don't think that it is the transfer box. You should check the gearbox instead.
I don't have much idea in LT5s so I can't help you....
Hello again. We checked the gearbox and it was full of rust. It is not enough to revise it, but I need to get a new one. Difficult though to get a good LT85. So if you know anything...
Do you or any other here know by any chance if a British LT85 will work. Did they not all come from Spain? The only Serial number we found was I173. It is not a split case and has no oil pump. Does it matter what case it has or do all LT85 will fit to the clutch and the transferbox LT230? Thanks for any help.
Does anyone here has experience with a turbo kit for that motor or knows where to get one? Thanks.
